Life science infusion
INSPIRED BY NATURE
Like artists, we find inspiration in the world around us. As a paints and coatings company, that inspiration is obviously found in the colors and effects we’re responsible for bringing into people’s lives (did you know there’s a good chance that most things you touch in your daily life are painted or coated – from the walls and furniture inside your home, your car, the bridge you drive over, your office building, and even your mobile phone!) But colors and effects are certainly not where the creativity stops.
The actual paint and coating formulations we create – and the science that makes them possible – can also be inspired by nature and the evolution of living organisms. Let’s see what we can learn and achieve together – infusing life science technologies and bio-active ingredients to enhance the performance of our products and provide additional benefit.
Bio-active ingredients push boundaries
For us, this is new territory. We want to explore the unknown. By adding bio-active ingredients into the mix and merging them with conventional technology, we want to create new products. We foresee bio-active ingredients that, for example, act as bio-active catalysts, replacing biocides and providing additional features in resins and coatings.
That means infusing our paints and coatings with the life science solutions you’ve developed has the potential to create new, exciting and sustainable products.
Outside the can at AkzoNobel
Looking for inspiration? In our Marine business, we collaborated with biologists to better understand the interaction of living organisms with coated underwater surfaces. That helped us to revolutionize the anti-fouling market with our Intersleek product range.
Microbiologists are also helping us improve long-term shelf stability of water-based paint.
What we’re looking for
- Your solution is not just in your head. There is a clear proof of concept which is ready to be further developed for this purpose
- Your solution contains a bio-active component: for example, enzymes, microbes, …
Have you got the solution?
We are closed for submissions, we will announce the finalists on April 11!
